SM SHARES A 60-YEAR SUCCESS STORY.
As PANA (Philippine Association of National Advertisers) celebrates its Diamond Jubilee, it features one local establishment that, likewise, enters its 60th year as a huge part of the Filipino family’s life. This is no other than SM.
SM began as the brainchild of then 12-year old, Mr. Henry Sy, Sr. In his tender age, his dream was to create a better life for himself, his family, and his community. This was how a modest little shoe store in Manila came to be. Nobody expected that what was once SM Shoemart would blossom to the giant SM Supermalls is today. To date, SM has expanded to 70 malls across the country, accumulating a daily shopper count of 3.5 million nationwide. Aside from being a shopping and eating place, SM has gotten so big that it’s become the official venue for various sports competitions and events –which include concerts by international celebrities.
SM launched its 60th celebration last May 21. It’s only fitting to mark this momentous occasion with a few lessons in success from the SM man himself --Chinese-Filipino business magnate, investor, and philanthropist, Mr. Sy. Each Henry Sy, Sr. quote below helped pave the way for one SM milestone after another.
“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always believed in doing my best, that one should aspire to be #1.”
“Doing a mall is not only construction of the physical place. We want shopping at our malls to be a unique and an enjoyable experience.”
“My basic strategy is to stick to my core business and to my area of expertise.”
“There is no such thing as overnight success or easy money. If you fail, do not be discouraged; try again.”
“When you do well, do not change your ways.”
“Success is not just good luck: it is a combination of hard work, good credit standing, opportunity, readiness, and timing.”
“Success will not last if you do not take care of it.”
“You have to have a dream, whether big or small. Then plan, focus, work hard and be very determined to achieve your goals.”
Like PANA, SM takes Responsible Brand Building to heart by making certain each endeavor the corporation takes follows Mr. Sy’s set values of creating a better life for others. “SM’s brand promise is always at the core of everything.”, Miss Cua, VP for SM’s Marketing Management, says. “Just as the consumer and the business landscape constantly evolve, the emphasis is also in the company's commitment to constantly bring in retail landscape innovation to the Philippines.”
SM is a member of PANA and regularly participates in PANA’s monthly talks. These two 60-year old companies are taking off from current strengths, commemorating hallmarks, and gearing up to set new ones.
